生活在这个社会中每个人，都拥有着自己生命、生活，也拥有着自己的一个小社会。

但在这样的社会里，如果你没有足够的能力去影响，那么你就会像99%以上的人一样，你的社会你做不了主！

房价那么高，物价那么贵，连自己的吃住行都要让别人给安排好了，你不得不去某个地方打工赚点钱，或者被某种力量逼着要贷款个几十年买房子，然后在郁闷中老去；有的时候你想不明白，为什么在医院窗口里的那些人行动就不能快一些、态度就不能好一些，即使你做好了花很多钱的思想准备时，可人家就是要让你两个小时、五个小时地耗着；互联网时代里，大部分的网络资源确实是免费的，但你的博客、你的账号却也有随时随地被删除的可能，人家的地盘你可以来玩、来用，但游戏规则人家说的算；天灾人祸更是无法避免，该来的总会来，如果哪天世界末日来了，也是一样。

所以的这些，你都做不了主。

其实想想，还是有很多虽然与我们紧密相关并且事情虽小，却无法由我们做主的事。

这也会慢慢让人习惯了。

08年10月份的时候，我有一个运行了三年多的MSN空间被毫无预兆、悄无声息地和谐了（国内不可访问）。

也是在前不久，我替某公司维护的公司博客，因为随着流量与影响的越来越大，也是在没有任何事先告知的情况下被强制关闭，成了封杀用户。

还有我的虚拟主机空间的网站，发个日志前还要挨个地审查里面的字是否通过，再决定是否让我发表。

于是，对于我任何属于我个人社会中的东西，我随时准备着被做主。

这个社会中，绝大多数的人都是弱势群体。

当强势的一方在面对弱势的公众是一套的时候，对于逐个的弱势来说是另外一套，他们强势的很霸道。不要去相信任何一个主体当着大家的面说他们会如何如何，也只有当你这个体遇到的时候才懂的。

如果你某天被通缉，被仇家追杀，总之是不得不亡命天涯……

请记得以下要点：

第一条,跑路过程中的通讯

1,最大的忌讳,用手机

手机虽然作为很先进的通讯工具,方便了联络,但是在跑路途中,这个确是最大的安全隐患,一个电话可能你就会被KO掉了。可能有的朋友会说,你说的是因为手机卡是用你身份证办的吧,你可以办那种不用身份证办的电话卡啊,或者是用别人的身份证办的卡啊。问题不在这里,而是目前的手机定位情况,如果真的是犯了比较大的事情,一般你的手机肯定会被锁定的,包括你的通话和短信。至于定位,一般开机40秒之内定位你没什么问题。可能又有不懂的童鞋要问了,我又没有打电话,怎么会定位我呢?不知道你们有没有用过Googlemap的定位功能,或者是AGPS,这个给手机没有GPS功能的朋友带来了很多方便,可以实时定位你的位置……,这个的实现其实是基于手机信号发射站来定位的,多维定位法,一般精确度在300-400米范围内,你所处位置的基站越多,定位越精确,只要你手机开机,有信号,基站就会不断扫描你手机信号源,然后多维定位。所以……跑路过程中最好是不要使用手机通讯,否则你很快就会被锁定……。可能你在美国大片中经常看到有人打电话然后被锁定在某个建筑内,这当然不是危言耸听。我不知道他们是不是基于手机基站扫描定位,我想可能还有卫星定位技术在里面吧, 不管怎么样,手机还是不用为妙

每个手机都有移动设备识别码，IMEI码是唯一的.当你手机接入通信网络时，通过手机的IMEI码，就可以对你的手机进行识别，监视，录音，定位等，所以一定要同时换手机和卡的，不能只换卡而不换手机.

因为中国的山寨手机共用一个移动设备识别码，而导致巴基斯坦情报部门难以监控恐怖分子的手机通信.

2,固定电话联系方式

很多人之所以被抓,可能就是因为实在想家,用固定电话给家里打了个电话。然后很快就被KO掉了。固定电话不具备移动性,一般打电话都会显示区号,然后根据这个区号,再去当地电信查,很快就能具体到某一不电话机。可能又有朋友要问了,我用街道旁边的IC卡公用电话,总找不到我吧,这个,实在的说,更好找到你的大致位置了,街边的IC卡公用电话都是分段号码,并且在电信里直接有分布图,根据你的电话号码,很快就能追踪到你所使用的那部电话所在的街道名称和位置……,这样你的位置还是会被暴露,给跑路带来风险。

总结: 跑路过程中的通讯解决方案

可以找到当地的中学生或者是去网吧找个,给他一些钱,让他打电话给另外个城市的朋友或者网友,当然,距离越远越好,然后通过他再转告给你想联系的人,如果为了更安全,可以多跳转几次。这样即使追查起来,想找到你的位置,可能在某个环节就会断掉。

第二条,跑路过程中的交通

跑路,当然是要跑了,跑的越隐蔽越好,越少人知道越好,越快也越好。所以交通是很重要。

交通无非就是海陆空,机场车站,码头,或者自己开车或者驴车马车牛车都可以。没有做不到,只有想不到。

首先,坐飞机跑路这个是首先要排除掉的,机场人员众多,安全检查有是最严密的。pol.ice叔叔安排的数量也是最多的。身份核查也是最严密的,身份证识别是和公共安全专家局的那个身份证识别系统是联网的,去机场坐飞机跑路等于自投罗网。聪明人一般都不会坐飞机跑路。

其次,坐火车跑路,这个也是很不明智的选择。火车站现在安检级别也升级了,火车站内监控众多。虽然说火车站人多,置身其中还是相对安全的说,但是门口中总有 pol.ice叔叔在那里查身份证,看到可疑人员就会让你掏出身份证在电脑上查询一下(□□□,插播一条新闻,本人每次坐火车基本上都会被视为可疑对象查身份证),所以这个路线也不是很安全的,万一被pol.ice叔叔查身份证,那当场就挂了。不推荐

关于坐汽车跑路,汽车又分长途和短途汽车,长途汽车一般发车目的明确,距离虽然远,一般都是走高速公路,但是可能就在几个地方停,所以万一暴露始发地点,目的地很快就会暴露,缩小pol.ice叔叔的追捕范围。但是长途汽车暴露时间短,接触的人也少,这个可以适当考虑,当然,坐长途汽车,你可以不到达目的地下车,可以在某一路段下车,然后在路上拦一些跑长途的货车,搭个顺风车,有钱的话适当的给车主一些钱,他们还是乐意带你的,当然,这个要看人品和运气了。短途汽车,安检比较松一些,目的地短,经常换乘,迂回主动性比较强,但是由于暴露时间长,接触的人多,人多眼杂,也容易被发现,需慎重考虑……

另外一个走公路考虑的就是租车,找个人给他一些钱,去租赁公司租一辆车,走小路开,这样暴露的可能性就很小,安全系数高一些,这个是公路最佳出行方案……

走水路,全国跑路要走水路的地方貌似不多,内陆无非就是从重庆到珠江三角洲走水路,外围就是从广西,湛江,珠海,广州,青岛,南京,天津,海南,大连等城市坐船,不过这个危险系数高,非常,极度不推荐……

第三,跑路中的身份伪造

跑路过程中一定不能用自己的真实身份证,这样很快就会被pol.ice叔叔盯上的。在外面不管住店还是什么的,都是需要身份证的。至少要有三张或者三张以上身份证。至于身份证的来源,大致有两种。办证广告遍布全国各地,更有亚洲办证集团公司,每个城市的天桥下都有专门给人办证的,只要你想要的,没有办不出来的,50块钱一张身份证,200块钱办的比真的都还真,随便花点钱,都可以给你办出来一打。另外一个就是找你当地的贼头,这个需要一些关系,他们手头一般都有别人的身份证,花点钱,从他们手里买个两三张真正的身份证还不是什么问题的,当然,要找和你长的比较相近的,年龄差别不大的,不要连性别都搞混淆了。

第四,跑路过程中的住

跑路绝对是一个长期的过程,在这里肯定要考虑到住。你不能一直在路上跑啊,总有累的时候,需要一个落脚点。住当然是短期的住,跑路不可能在一个地方呆的时间太长,除非是绝对的安全,当然绝对的安全是不存在的。首先住有几点方案推荐

1. 对于经济条件和安全性来考虑,3星级以上的宾馆推荐住,因为这些地方一般都是比较正规的地方。一般不会有pol.ice过去查房或者抓赌博P C什么的,星级越高,安全系数越高,有些地方的五星级宾馆一般都是go-vern-ment招待单位,除非有特殊情况,否则pol.ice叔叔是不会贸然去查房的。另外一个就是当地go-vern-ment招待所或者宾馆,这些地方,pol.ice也是避之不及的。安全系数更高。不过要注意尽量避开监控设备,最好带着帽子什么的进去,用假身份证开房。

2。就是大一点的洗浴中心之类的娱乐场所,这些地方,一般都是有社会背景的人开的,越大,后台越硬。这些地方一般都提供免费住宿,因为是洗浴的地方,只有入口等处有监控设备,其他的地方不会有的,进去洗浴又不需要身份证,降低了安全风险,何况里面吃喝洗住玩一条龙服务,在里面呆上十天半个月,没人会管你的,不过建议还是不要常呆,否则引起怀疑,会带pol.ice过来找你的。

3. 找一些农家乐,现在的很多农家乐都提供住宿服务,当然农家乐里面不会有监控什么的,管理上虽然登记但是和其他地方相比,还是要松懈的多,pol.ice也一般不会没事跑那么远去查房,在里面住上三五天,还不是什么问题,何况农家乐一般都远离市区和农村,信息交流不是那么及时,安全性相对较高……

4,一些小旅馆之类的不推荐入住,因为这个会经常被pol.ice叔叔查房,另外人多眼杂,安全系数极度不高,不过学校周围的小旅馆相对来说安全一些,因为毕竟里面都是开房的学生居多。pol.ice叔叔也是心知肚明,除非是缺钱花了或者是学校联手想去查房,否则一般不会去的,可以考虑短期入住。

5,最落魄最省钱的住,可以考虑和流浪汉或者拾荒者住在烂尾楼或者桥洞下面,一般城市都有烂尾楼,里面一般都聚集这流浪汉或者拾荒者。这里一般情况下pol.ice是不会清查的,何况一般的烂尾楼外面都是大门紧锁。突然多出来一两个陌生人,他们也不会过多关注,只要你不和他抢地盘,他是不会找你麻烦的,也没人想招惹麻烦,所以在那里呆上十天半个月,相对来说还是比较安全的,这种方式推荐落魄期住……

第五,关于隐

古人云,大隐隐于市。看来古人也明白,真正的高手都是隐藏在市井中的。所以我们也不可避免,遵循古训。目前来说,人员管理混乱的地方就是建筑工地之类的地方,因为建筑啊工地人员流动大,登记管理上也有很多薄弱环节,拿着假身份证出去登记一下,基本上就可以在里面干活了。大一点的建筑工地可能会在一个地方呆上一年多,然后再转战其他地方。pol.ice叔叔不可能每天没事就往建筑工地上跑,至于工程项目组的他们最多也就是知道包工头的人数和名字,至于包工头下面有多少人,恐怕只有包工头自己清楚,也就是在开工和发薪水的时候清点一下人数。所以相对来说,还是比较安全的,另外一个工地上的人都是来自五湖四海的,没有谁会问起谁是干嘛的。

切忌往农村跑,不要以为农村偏远就安全了,其实这个观念是错误的。至少来说,现在在偏远的农村,都是和外界有联系的,很多都是几辈子土生土长的原生居民。突然多了一个陌生人,这个都是他们茶余饭后的谈资。农村人爱扎堆聊天,时间长了这些消息会传的很远,很可能就会传到当地pol.ice叔叔的耳朵了。地方再偏远,也是party的管辖范围,有村支部之类组织的说,很快就会暴露身份。

另外一个地方就是,矿山,林场之类的。矿山我就不多说了。云南,陕西,山西,河南,内蒙古,四川都有煤矿或者其他矿产,当然,最好的是隐于煤矿,这个一只脚踏进阎王殿的职业,内蒙古或者平顶山的露天煤矿就不要考虑了,这样隐不住,会露出狐狸尾巴的。最好就是往山西或者陕西跑,小煤矿众多,矿主不会把统计名单送到公共安全专家局的,除非他想关门大吉。人数报的越少越好,这样万一出了事故死人了,可以隐瞒死亡人数,减少麻烦。也正符合了你隐的条件,不过你要做好心理准备,不是什么非在这里隐不可的情况,就没必要来这里拿生命开玩笑,毕竟你跑路的目的也是为了活命或者其他的。小命都没了,还谈什么隐……

林场也会招一些临时工人,这些也不会统计上报的公共安全专家机关的,短期的隐,在那里干个半年几个月的,不会有什么问题的。适合短期的隐……,这个适合往东北跑,大兴安岭那边适合隐,如果运气好,隐一辈子不是什么问题。

渔港码头就不要考虑什么隐了,因为海事局和海警会不定期的走访什么的,人员普查的比较严格,很容易被pol.ice叔叔抓现行……

关于钱财

逃亡中绝对不能适应任何本人身份开的银行卡信用卡，ATM机也不行.一下就能被追踪到,而且还有录像监控.尽量携带现金,现金为王嘛.但是考虑用假身份证重新开户,这样别查的的可能性少点.

关于联络

考虑到在神奇的土地上,任何人都可能会无端的因为任何原因被抓被追捕,所以事先和家人和信得过的密友制定一个密码联络方式很有必要.具体办法自己参照各种书籍.

关于武力

要逃亡,武力和智力同样重要,平时需要适当的练习搏击术,因为除非你是已经被订上了,调来刑警特警来捉捕你这要犯,否则通常是在巡景片警前被查证件暴露的,别以为他们的身手就好,有的JC可能一辈子都没开过几抢打过几架.看杨大侠就知道JC的战斗力了.这时要举手不留情,快准狠,事后如果没人,就应清理现场.如果是闹市,就立刻隐入人群,不能乱窜.冷静很重要.

关于隐

每去到一个地方,就应该先熟悉附近的环境,哪是断头路,哪有小巷,哪可以通到哪,哪有监控,哪的监控额定死角,都应该搞清楚,这点可以留意一下当地的小偷是住哪和在哪作案的,但不能可他们接触,因为他们随时可能是JC的线人.

心理层面，镇定果断什么的就不说了，特别要注意的一点是切忌多情。要让自己相信：那个被追杀（追捕）的***是谁？我和他（他）一点联系都没有，我怎么会知道他（她）在哪里，在干什么？

做到这个很难，但是一定要努力做到。

你可以在心理痛苦和思念，但是不要联系他们，不要联系你的父母，你的妻儿，你的兄弟，你的朋友，更不要联系你的初恋情人……统统不要联系。这样并不是让你学习范跑跑——你得明白，此时你的联系只会增加他们的痛苦，给他们带来麻烦，同时增加了你暴漏的可能性，除此之外什么意义也没有。你要相信：如果你全身而退，总有一天你会回来的，会补偿你所做的一切——当然更可能是物是人非，子欲养而亲不待。但是，你回不了头。

为安全跑路而必须进行的联系才是必要的。其余的都不要。

逃亡和隐居的途中也不要为任何事动情。牢记这个戒律：“没有你在三十秒内不能舍弃的人和事情”。

上路吧，不要回头，不要和我说再见。

刚刚结束的法国PARIS站OLYMPIC圣火传递，并不象多数国人所知道的那样平静。在中国人把象征友谊与和平的OLYMPIC火传进法国时，我们看到法国人和法国政府都做了什么：

1.圣火传递前，法国当地电视台号召市民上街抗议示，说：“不要让中国的旗子飘的到处都是”。
2.圣火传递中，火炬在Z D势力及其支持者的暴力阻挠下，被迫四次熄灭；
3.负责安保的法国警察任由Z D分子在其眼皮底下抢夺火炬，殴打中国残疾火
炬手，却袖手旁观；
4.火炬所到之处，法国人成群结队地举着Z D分子的旗子，叫嚣“XZ独立”，“中国羞耻”等口号，向中国示威；
5.成群的法国青年甚至抢夺中国留学生手中的五星红旗，当众撕碎，并殴打中国留学生；
6.法国巴黎市政府在圣火经过市政厅时，悬挂出支持XZ独立的横幅和标语，全体市议员胸前佩带支持XZ独立的标章，使得原定于在市政厅前举行的庆祝仪式不得不取消；
7.法国的主流媒体在圣火传递结束后，以这样的标题进行了回顾：“火炬在巴黎惨败”法国《费加罗报》，“给中国一记耳光”法国《解放报》。

在法国人和法国政府无视OLYMPIC圣火的神圣与尊严，无视中国人民的友好情谊，无视华夏子孙民族情感的此时此刻，到了我们打回一耳光的时候了！！！

Living in Shanghai: Introduction

Shanghai is one of the most vibrant cities in the world and a very exciting place to live. It is the most modern city in China and has a long tradition of looking to the west for inspiration. Often referred to as ‘the Paris of the East’, Shanghai boasts a modern infrastructure and the progressive outlook of its residence is famous throughout China.

The rate of change has been staggering over the past ten years and change is a common theme running through life in this city of 16 million people. It is progressing at a rapid rate and new buildings, shops and hotels are springing up virtually everyday. Like many other large Asian cities, Shanghai suffers from pollution, traffic congestion, and overcrowding. However, it is a city undergoing enormous change and is one of the most dynamic and interesting places to live today. The allure of 30's Shanghai is evident in some of the city's older quarters, and this is juxtaposed with modern skyscrapers heralding a bright future.

More and more foreign companies and people are establishing themselves in China, and more of the commodities they demand are in hot pursuit. Western clothes, toiletries, music and food are all available, although often at an inflated price. Local medical facilities are of a high standard, and western doctors are available, but are expensive.

Unfortunately, while bookshops abound, only a few stock good English books. The situation is improving, but for the moment the selection of English reading material is limited.

International newspapers and magazines are available at larger hotels.

The social scene in Shanghai is constantly changing and expanding, like everything else in the city. There is a very active nightlife, with many pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants to choose from. There are also innumerable teahouses and coffee shops, a concert hall that plays host to local and foreign musicians and shows, and some quality museums, opera houses, gardens, and other cultural establishments. Karaoke bars are everywhere for those so-inclined.

Foreigners and local Shanghainese mix easily and develop relationships freely. Chinese people are friendly and are attracted by and to western culture and ideas. The locals are eager to meet and understand foreigners in Shanghai.

An interesting cultural experience

We view teaching at Kai En as an opportunity for teachers to experience life in a different culture as well as develop their teaching skills and gain valuable EFL experience abroad. Whilst we are an academic business and therefore focus most heavily on working with teachers to help them get the most out of their experiences in the classroom, we also endeavor to provide as much pastoral support to the teachers as is needed, to ensure that the teachers have the foundation of security to really enjoy their time in Shanghai.

In addition, our salary and benefits package is generous enough to allow the teacher to sample plenty of Shanghai’s nightlife and vibrant social scene, or to leave the city with modest savings / traveling fund.

Living in Shanghai: The Cost of Living

Describing the cost of living in Shanghai is very difficult because there is such a diversity of life styles here. The vast majority of employees in Shanghai earn a salary of between 2,000RMB and 4,000RMB per month, although at the other end of the spectrum there are long term expatriates with expense accounts and local wealthy entrepreneurs.

Shanghai is a relatively expensive city to live in, compared with many other cities in Asia because of it’s rapidly growing economy and because of the increased spending power that economic growth has given the Shanghainese people. In particular imported goods, western services and entertainment (for example, many bars and restaurants that are targeted at the expatriate business community) are expensive. However, there is a growing number of much more affordable bars and clubs targeted at students and teachers, who charge around 10 RMB ($1) for a drink.

Although the services and products that cater for foreigners are expensive, the basics of every day life (food, drink, public transport, clothes, stationary, etc.) are very affordable.

Living in Shanghai: Social Life

Shanghai offers something for almost everyone because it combines both Asian and Western forms of entertainment. Japanese influences are evident in the number of Japanese restaurants and Karaoke bar and clubs. The Taiwanese influence can be felt in the number of teahouses offering a huge variety of different kinds of exotic teas and fruit drinks. Western influence on entertainment is more recent but can be experienced with the growing number of nightclubs and discos. Live music is also a recent development in Shanghai: whether it is a local rock group or a Jazz Quartet, live music is common any night of the week. Finally, Shanghainese have taken up the pub/bar culture with a vengeance. There are down scale student type hangouts and upscale German beer houses.

So whether you like to read a book in a teahouse or coffee shop, dance the night away in a nightclub, chat in a pub, or sing in a karaoke (or KTV), Shanghai has it all.

For gastronomes, Shanghai is also a Mecca, with the main problem being how to choose from the enormous selection on offer. In addition to the many varieties of Chinese foods (Spicy food from Sichuan and Hunan, Beijing Duck, Shanghainese seafood, Cantonese Dim Sum, hotpot, etc.), there are Argentinean and Brazilian steak houses, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Arabic, Mexican, Irish, and Thai restaurants.

Prices vary from $1.20 to $8 dollars for a beer. Restaurant prices also vary from $5 to $30 for a meal. Competition is stiff and most bars and restaurants offer specials and happy hours in order to compete.

HONG KONG -- A computer-science instructor's arrest on charges of intellectual-property infringement has sparked a debate about whether a popular application that blocks Web advertisements is fair or foul.

The instructor, Chen Shoufu, 28 years old, created an "add-on" program called Coral QQ that modifies QQ, China's dominant instant-messaging service.

Chinese Internet company Tencent Holdings Ltd. owns QQ, and Mr. Chen's program changes how it's used -- in ways that many users like. Among them, it blocks advertisements, although it also includes some ads and spam from other Web companies as a way to get revenue for itself. It also resolves Internet addresses, pinpointing the computer from which a person is messaging, a feature Tencent offers, but for a fee of 10 yuan ($1.35) a month.

Both QQ and Coral QQ are available as free downloads on the Web. Mr. Chen offers software for download on his Web site, and he includes Tencent QQ, his own Coral QQ add-on and several commercial ads or spamware from other companies.

Mr. Chen created Coral QQ in 2001 when he was a student at the Beijing Institute of Technology, where he now works in the computer center as an instructor.

China has the world's second-biggest Internet market after the U.S., with more than 160 million users, and it is a thriving market for such add-ons. Coral QQ has about 40.6 million users, according to Chinese computer-science publication Pchome.

Tencent first complained to Mr. Chen in late 2002, saying Coral QQ violated its copyright and warning him to stop distributing it. He did. Mr. Chen then devised a noninvasive "patch" on the program -- a separate piece of software -- that would run concurrently with QQ on a user's computer and modify it as the two went humming along. In 2003, he resumed offering Coral QQ.

In 2006, as it became increasingly apparent that Coral QQ was only growing in popularity, Tencent filed a 500,000 yuan ($68,000) lawsuit alleging copyright infringement against Mr. Chen and won a judgment for 100,000 yuan, which Mr. Chen paid. In early August, Tencent complained to the police in Shenzhen, where it has its headquarters, and on Aug. 16 Mr. Chen was detained. Tencent said Mr. Chen was "making illegal profits and infringing on Tencent's copyright."

The confrontation has conferred a minor hero's status on Mr. Chen among China's Web users. Thousands have posted messages on blogs and forums in support of him.

Hong Bo, a widely known Beijing tech blogger who goes by the handle Keso, said in an interview that Tencent's QQ "is bullying Chinese users by monopolizing the market. Coral QQ helped those people, who wanted to use QQ but hated the software, become Tencent users."

Tencent introduced instant messaging in China when the country had just over two million Internet users. Today, QQ users send as many as three billion instant messages a day. But Tencent's dominance of the Chinese messaging market has at times vexed some of the 270 million users the company estimates the service has, including multiple subscriptions, often because of the pop-up ads and service fees.

"We believe that add-ons are not only an infringement on property rights but also a main cause of online safety problems for users," Tencent says. "Our aim is to better protect the users' rights while protecting the company's legal rights."

In a recent episode of a fast-paced legal-cases program called "Case Tracking," broadcast on a Shenzhen satellite-TV station, Liu Haihua of the Shenzhen public-security bureau in Nanshan district, said, "Coral QQ is making illegal profits from copyright infringement and binding in commercial ads. When users install Coral QQ in their computers, these commercials are automatically installed."

The police say the case is under investigation and wouldn't make Mr. Chen, detained in Shenzhen, available for comment.

You Yunting, a noted intellectual-property lawyer in Shanghai, says he is considering defending Mr. Chen and Coral QQ in court. He agrees with the court judgment against Mr. Chen but not with the criminal proceedings.

"He's wrong, but not so bad as to be jailed," Mr. You says.

China's Computer Software Copyright Regulations hold that providing revised software without the express agreement of the copyright owner may cause the provider to be civilly -- or criminally -- liable. There are few Chinese laws or regulations specifically governing add-ons, although add-ons to online games have been prohibited since 2003. As for whether an add-on application constitutes software piracy, Mr. You says it defies definition.

"Intellectual-property protection in China is still complex at this stage," he says.

Google Patent - Analysed

I've spent a good deal of time of the past two days analyzing the Google patent.

I believe the patent expresses three things:

Factors Google thinks are important and may be in the current algorithm
Factors Google thinks are important and want to incorporate into the algorithm in the next 3-5 years
Factors Google would like to stake an early claim to, so competitors don't use them.

I've included the sections where I drew my conclusions from for reference.

Domain Factors

Length of domain registration (section 0099)
Domains are monitored for changes in expiration (section 38,39)
Nameserver, and Whois data is monitored for changes and valid physical addresses (same technology used in google maps)
Name servers and possibly class C networks should have a mix of whois data, registrars, and keyword and non-keyword domains (section 0101)
Documents/websites are given a discovery date when they are discovered through any of the following means
- external link
- user gathered data(sections 1,2,3,4, 38)
Websites must have more than one document (section 5)
Change in the weighting of key terms for a domain are monitored for changes (section 50)
Changes in a domain to topics that don't match prior content are an indicator of change of focus, existing prior links will be discounted (section 0084)

Documents and Pages

Documents are compared for changes in the following
- frequency (time frame)
- amount of change
- (section 6,7,8, 9, 11, 12)
Number of new documents (internal ?) linked to document is recorded (sections 9,13)
Change in the weighting of key terms for the document is recorded (section 10, 14)
Documents are given a staleness (lack of change?) rating (section 19)
The rate at which content of a document changes and it's anchor text changes are recorded (section 31, 33)
Outbound links to low trust or affiliate websites may be an indicator of low quality (section 0089)
Don't change the focus of many documents at once ( section 0128)

Links

A links anchor text and discovery date are recorded (sections 54, 55, 56, 57, 58)
Links are given a discovery date and monitored for appearance and disappearance over time(section 22,26, 58)
Links and anchor text are monitored for growth rates (section 48)
Links are monitored for changes in anchor text over a given period of time (sections 27, 30, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58)
Links are weighted on trust or authoritativeness of the linking document, as is the newness or longevity of the link (section 28, 58, 0074)
Link growth of independent peer documents (different class C networks?) are monitored.
The rate at which new links to a document appear or disappear is monitored (sections 23, 24)
A freshness rating of new links is recorded (section 32)
It is determined whether a document has trend of appearing or disappearing links (section 25)
A distribution rating for the age of all links is recorded (section 29)
Links that have a long lifespan are more valuable over links that have a shorter lifespan (section 59)
Links from stale pages are devalued where links from fresh pages are given a boost (section 60)
Link churn is monitored and recorded (section 61, 62)
New websites are not expected to have a large number of links (section 0038)
Link growth should remain constant and slow (section 0069, 0077)
Burst link growth may be a strong indicator of search engine spam ( section 0077)
If a document is stale (not changed) but is still acquiring new links it will be considered fresh ( section 0075)
If a document is stale and has no link growth or has a decrease of inbound links it's outbound links will be discounted (section 0080)
A spike in links would be acceptable if document has one or more links from authority documents (section 0110)
Anchor text should be varied as much as possible (sections 0120, 121)
The growth of variation in anchor text should remain consistent (section 0120, 0121)

Search Results

Volume of searches over time are recorded and monitored for increases (sections 17, 18)
Information regarding a documents rankings are recorded and monitored for changes (sections 41, 42, 43)
Click through rates are monitored for changes in seasonality, or burst increases, or other spike traffic (section 43, 44)
Click through rates are monitored for increase or decrease trends (section 51, 52, 53)
Click through rates are monitored to see if stale or fresh documents are preferred for a search query (sections 20, 21)

Keywords with little or no change in results should match domains with stable rankings (section 0105, 106, 107)
Keywords with high volatility of change should have domains with more volatility (section 0105, 106, 107)

Why Top Employees Quit

It's like clockwork. Every year a portion of our top talent decides it's time to move on. Once those bonus or holiday checks are cashed, the flood gates open and the resignation letters start flowing in.

I work in a large company and this is a problem that we have with our IT and Sales groups in particular. I reached out a to a few peers with other companies (one is an IT exec and one is actually a Group President) and as an exercise, we took a bunch of historical data and started identifying the factors that led to the annual exodus. We focused only the top 20% of the employees from a performance standpoint. It's not that the remaining 80% is unimportant, however, from a productivity, growth, and brainpower perspective, the top 20% of any group is critical. Moreover, these are the employees that are very difficult to replace.

To do this, we reviewed notes from exit interviews, cross referenced annual reviews and ultimately came up with 178 voluntary terminations from people that would have been considered in the top 20%.

To try and keep focused on macro issues, we consolidated the responses and placed them into categories:

Money
Unchallenged
Too Challenged
Dead Company
Watch your Levels (and the BS)

Here is the breakdown of the categories. I know someone is bound to ask why it doesn't add up so... Please keep in mind that this will not add up to 178 because several people insisted on listing 2-3 reasons when the question only asked for 1 reason.

Money: This one was obvious however we found some interesting nuggets of information:The Stats:
- Of the 178 files, 83 people listed money as a reason for leaving.
- 62 listed it as the only reason
- In those 62 cases, only 8 were at the top of their pay scale - so there was still room to earn more.
Roughly 46% of the employees that left did so because of money concerns. To be honest, I thought this would be a much higher percentage. I think the most alarming stat to me here is that only 8 out of 83 (9%) people had maxed out their pay potential. Keep in mind that these are top employees that would have received above-average pay increases. My assumption is that they viewed changing companies as the faster path to higher earnings despite the fact that there may have been additional promotions available (which was the case several times).

This may mean a few things:
- We are not watching the market rate for these positions closely enough - our "pay potential" might be way too low
- Our pay scale doesn't increase at the same rate as the market rates
- Star Employees know their value. If you won't compensate them for it, they will look elsewhere in a heartbeat
- We are not doing a good enough job at drawing the line towards advancement. If the employee actually sees advancement as a sure possibility as opposed to a pipe dream, it may slow their decision to jump to another company.
Just because a engineer was hired 3 years ago at $70K and currently makes $77K does not mean that is the going rate simply because you built the comp plan that way. If your HR group is not benchmarking what these positions are really making in the world, you better.

Unchallenged: At what point does workplace monotony kill someone's drive? The Stats: 42 records (23%) showed this was their #1 reason for leaving.

One of the forms was completed by an employee that had the exact same job function for 3 years. He is a great example of this point. This employee was in the 20% tier because he had mastered his position and was viewed by many as someone literally doing the work of 2 people. His performance reviews were flawless. BUT - and here is the killer, he didn't feel that way. He thrived on pressure and having a huge workload was natural to him. Although his manager didn't see it, this guy was bored out of his skull and wanted more. Year after year he exceeded every expectation on his review and he was compensated for it but that was it. In this case, it wasn't a matter of compensation, it was strictly responsibility.

One might blame this particular employee for not making his own opportunities and being more aggressive. However, one may also blame the manager for not fully understanding his top employee's goals, motivations, or attitude. It is incredibly important to have a clear understanding on what your star employees think. The best way to understand this is by simply talking to them. I am not saying you have to be best friends but as a manager, you have to know how the employee feels. In fact, it's kind of easy to test for. If there is an employee killing all his goals, try giving him more responsibility. It could be as small as becoming a mentor for a new hire, or asking him to interview someone for you. The goal is to keep a star challenged without crossing the line.
Too Challenged: Toss 'em in and see if they swim.
The Stats: 38 records (21%) showed this was their #1 reason for leaving.

Remember we are only talking about the 20% tier so the people that listed this reason, are not the lazy people of the bunch. They are the ones fed up with bureaucracy, hiring freezes, lack of cooperation, undefined goals, and poor technology. You cannot ask someone to complete 20 tasks and then give them inferior tools and personnel. A lot of employees will struggle through these problems because of their dedication to the company, however, at some point, the fight is no longer sustainable. The employee will either leave, OR , become so unmotivated that they lose their star status and become a normal employee and thus under perform.

You can not always depend on an employee to come to you with concerns. I don't care how often you proclaim you have an open door policy - it simply is not going to happen on a regular basis. To kill two birds with one stone, you could ask key employees for their views on the department, projects, etc. You can also ask for their solutions to the problems they present. Sure, their solutions may not always be implemented but at least they are involved and you know how they feel. When people view themselves as part of a solution, they are less likely to become disgruntled thus delaying the boiling point that forces them to leave.
Dead Company: AKA Death by Boredom
The Stats: 38 records (21%) showed this was their #1 reason for leaving

If the leadership team of your company is constantly drab regardless of the company's growth or the goals achieved, you are in trouble. All employees want money and to be challenged but they don't want to have to self-motivate 100% of the time. For example, I worked for a small company that hadn't created a new product in 10 years. Nothing ever changed and to make matters worse, the executives were all stiffs. I don't believe I ever saw an executive smile and that attitude trickled down the food chain. $30K a year with a company full of stiffs is worse to me than $28,500 with a fun energetic company. You can help take this burden off their plates buy injecting a little upbeat atmosphere. I am not talking about whirley ball, acting like a clown or naming Friday as "Beer in the office day", but your attitude speaks volumes. I will say that I was surprised that this percentage was just as high as those that felt "Too Challenged" from above.
Watch your Levels and the BS
The Stats: 51 people added something random to their primary reason of leaving.

Just because you are an Executive and depend on mid-level managers to do the day-to-day managing, does not mean that you should be ignorant to what is going on. We added this category after seeing the huge number of people having issues that appeared small, but were large enough for them to leave the company. So think of this as the micro managing managers, peer conflict sessions gone awry, crying employees in the bathrooms, process trolls, etc. Let me give you an example:

We saw one case where a department had 2 people leave because they disagreed with the same policy. So on a team of 9, the 2 strongest people left. Doesn't that indicate to management that the policy may be flawed? If I had been the VP or executive, I would have certainly been asking the group manager for a huge explanation. As it stood, the employees left and the policy stayed.

The key here is that your best employees are the best for a reason. When policies are changed, there is no one better than your star employee to consult with. This category actually reminds me of a post that Frank did a few weeks back listing 50 Ways a manager can get employees to quit. Basically, we saw half of these reasons on these forms and they are all things to at least be aware of because managers and team leaders do them all the time.

Key Performance Indicators Must be Key To Organizational Success

Many things are measurable. That does not make them key to the organization's success. In selecting Key Performance Indicators, it is critical to limit them to those factors that are essential to the organization reaching its goals. It is also important to keep the number of Key Performance Indicators small just to keep everyone's attention focused on achieving the same KPIs.

That is not to say, for instance, that a company will have only three or four total KPIs in the company. Rather there will be three or four Key Performance Indicators for the company and all the units within it will have three, four, or five KPIs that support the overall company goals and can be "rolled up" into them.

If a company Key Performance Indicator is "Increased Customer Satisfaction", that KPI will be focused differently in different departments. The Manufacturing Department may have a KPI of "Number of Units Rejected by Quality Inspection", while the Sales Department has a KPI of "Minutes A Customer Is On Hold Before A Sales Rep Answers". Success by the Sales and Manufacturing Departments in meeting their respective departmental Key Performance Indicators will help the company meet its overall KPI.

Good Key Performance Indicators vs. Bad

Defined: Change in Sales volume from month to month
Measured: Total of Sales By Region for all region
Target: Increase each month

What's missing? Does this measure increases in sales volume by dollars or units? If by dollars, does it measure list price or sales price? Are returns considered and if so do the appear as an adjustment to the KPI for the month of the sale or are they counted in the month the return happens? How do we make sure each sales office's volume numbers are counted in one region, i.e. that none are skipped or double counted? Defined: The total of the number of employees who resign for whatever reason, plus the number of employees terminated for performance reasons, and that total divided by the number of employees at the beginning of the year. Measured: The HRIS contains records of each employee. The separation section lists reason and date of separation for each employee. Monthly, or when requested by the SVP, the HRIS group will query the database and provide Department Heads with Turnover Reports. HRIS will post graphs of each report on the Intranet.
Target: Reduce Employee Turnover by 5% per year.

What Do I Do With Key Performance Indicators?

Once you have good Key Performance Indicators defined, ones that reflect your organization's goals, one that you can measure, what do you do with them? You use Key Performance Indicators as a performance management tool, but also as a carrot. KPIs give everyone in the organization a clear picture of what is important, of what they need to make happen. You use that to manage performance. You make sure that everything the people in your organization do is focused on meeting or exceeding those Key Performance Indicators. You also use the KPIs as a carrot. Post the KPIs everywhere: in the lunch room, on the walls of every conference room, on the company intranet, even on the company web site for some of them. Show what the target for each KPI is and show the progress toward that target for each of them. People will be motivated to reach those KPI targets.
